Committee advances GameCheck reporting regulation after DNR says system captured 173,000+ deer in first year

The Regulations and Administrative Procedures Committee voted to send document 5,331, which updates regulations to reference reporting via SC GameCheck, to the full committee with a recommendation that it be approved.
Charles Ruth and other DNR staff said the regulations implement a 2023 statutory change requiring DNR to file rules describing methods of harvest reporting; the statutory amendment had an effective date of July 2024. Ruth said the new reporting system performed strongly in its first year: "We had 173,000 plus deer reported through this system in year 1 of a new system for deer hunters." He told members DNR is required to file regulations describing the confirmation number and maintenance of records associated with reporting.
Members praised hunter compliance and DNR's reporting options, which include an app, website, toll-free phone, and text reporting. A committee member moved that the document be sent to the full committee with a recommendation that it be approved; the committee voted in favor by voice and advanced the regulation.
