Port Washington departments expand Stop the Bleed training and launch free smoke-detector program

Port Washington fire and police personnel, emergency management and Ascension EMS delivered Stop the Bleed training to education staff in the Port Washington-Saukville School District on Jan. 27, department staff told the commission. Two sessions, each with about 50 to 60 participants, combined lecture and hands-on practice; the district plans to order more than 200 "Stop the Bleed" kits for staff use in classrooms and go-bags.

Community smoke-detector program: The commission also heard that a joint effort between the fire department and the Fire & EMS Association has launched an online application for free smoke detectors for city and town residents who cannot procure or install detectors themselves. The application is available through the department's Facebook page and fire-department website. Staff said volunteers will install the detectors and schedule visits for residents who request help.
Program details and outreach: Department staff said the application is live and volunteers will provide installation service. The Stop the Bleed sessions included hospital-affiliated instructors and hands-on wound-packing and tourniquet practice; district student-services leadership ordered kits to deploy to school staff.
Ending: The commission heard no opposition to the programs; staff encouraged residents and organizations to use the online application and said the department will contact applicants to schedule installations.
