Arlington board approves new beginning band course at Arlington High School

Denise (staff member) summarized the course, saying it is designed "to provide an opportunity for students in grades 9 through 12 a chance to learn a woodwind or brass instrument at the introductory level and be a part of the band if they missed out on the initial chance of joining in middle school." She told the board the course would perform at seasonal concerts and use method books before progressing to standard concert band literature.
Board members and student advisors asked about enrollment thresholds and scheduling. Denise said the district would likely need a single section in the low‑to‑mid‑20s to run the course; she estimated "at least 1 section of 20–25 students" would be required to support it. The course, if approved, would be listed in the high‑school course catalog and offered during student registration; staff said it can be reoffered in future years if it does not enroll the first year.
Student Advisor Dasia said, "I think it's a really good opportunity for kids that come in to the high school," describing it as valuable for students who stopped lessons during COVID or who feel intimidated joining band later. Student Advisor Nichols said he would "vote yes" and noted the course would add another arts elective option for students.
The motion to approve the new beginning band course was moved by Director Knapp and seconded by Director Kelly. The board recorded unanimous approval: Director Diamond — aye; Director Kelly — aye; Director Watts — aye; President Lavett — aye; Director Knapp — aye.
The course will be added to the district catalog after this approval and offered to students during registration; staff said no additional board action was required to list the course, and the district can reoffer it in later years if initial enrollment is low.
