Resident: Ellwood Park pavilion differs from public presentation; parks director to follow up

Barbara Downer, a Brookfield resident, told the Village of Brookfield Board on Feb. 10 that the new pavilion at Ellwood Park does not match the design residents were shown during the public outreach process.
"It was originally told to us that the octagon shape would be taken down. It would be 4 posts. I have a picture that it is a square roof and what we got is silly," Downer said during the public comment period. She said the built structure does not complement the park and that progress visible at the site does not show finishing work.
President Garvey responded that the matter was not on the board agenda that night and asked Luke Gunderson of the Parks and Recreation Department to take Downer’s contact information and follow up. Gunderson was on the meeting agenda for other items and the board said staff would contact Downer and provide information outside the meeting.
Why it matters: The pavilion is part of an active park redevelopment and visible public concern suggests the village should clarify whether the final construction matches approved plans and presentation materials. Residents raised the issue during public comment rather than during a formal agenda item; the board directed staff to respond to the resident’s questions.
The board did not take action on the pavilion during the meeting. Gunderson told the board he or his staff would contact Downer to address her questions about the structure and the earlier presentation materials.
