The South Carolina Senate Family and Veterans’ Services Committee gave a unanimous favorable report to Senate Bill 89, which renames the South Carolina Military Based Task Force as the South Carolina Military Affairs Advisory Council and adds several local officeholders to the council.
Senate Bill 89 would add the chief executive officer of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce, the chairperson of Aiken County Council and the mayor of North Augusta as members. The bill would also increase the number of at‑large members appointed by the governor from five to six and require the full council to meet at least once a year.
Senator Gambrell, chair of the Veterans Affairs subcommittee, said the additional members were chosen because many South Carolinians live and work near Fort Eisenhower (formerly Fort Gordon) across the Georgia border and the added representation would give adjoining counties a voice on the council. Gambrell noted Fort Eisenhower is the headquarters for U.S. Army Cyber Command and that South Carolina residents working at the post have a stake in council deliberations. The subcommittee reported the bill favorably on January 15; it was approved unanimously in committee.
A motion for a favorable report was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote with no opposition. The bill will be sent to the Senate floor.
