Chilton County officials presented planned building improvements at the county animal shelter and requested commission authority to execute multiple contracts.
Animal control staff described a package that includes a standing‑seam metal roof (no exposed screws), replacement and wrapping of fascia and soffits, vinyl wrapping of gables to the block wall, new six‑inch gutters with leaf‑filter screens, and interior and exterior painting of the shelter and runs. "This is a great roof system... we shouldn't have to go back up there for 40 years unless something, you know, some storm or something happens," an animal control speaker told commissioners.
Staff said the work also includes door repairs, HVAC support and measures to divert water away from the building. Spire was identified as providing a new natural gas meter and upgrades to support heaters as a backup in case of electrical outages.
Animal control staff said there are multiple contract awards recommended and that they will ask the chairman to sign the contracts; the documents and a spreadsheet of recommended contract awards are included in the commission binder. No dollar totals were read into the record during the work session; staff said lower bids had been evaluated for scope differences and recommended the contracts that included the full roof eave extension and related work.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about which specific contracts covered roof, gutters and painting; staff confirmed separate contracts cover the roof system and the paint/gutter work. The item was set to appear on an upcoming regular meeting agenda for formal approval and signature.
