Elgin School District U-46 presented a proposed high school course, “Introduction to Instrumental Music,” to the Board of Education on Feb. 10 that would allow students who did not start musical study in elementary grades to join high school bands, orchestras or mariachi ensembles.
The curriculum-writing team—led by Fine Arts Coordinator Jamie Abney Geraldo with presenters Zachary Geller and Lisa Yago—described a standards-based course built on the National Core Arts Standards. The course is intended to run in four quarters, offer three sequence options and provide foundational skills in rhythm and theory, individual technique, goal setting and ensemble performance so students can transition into entry-level high school ensembles.
