Staff reports: Menominee Park skating, sponsorship guide, tree pruning and seasonal hiring updates
Summary
Staff told the board about weekend ice skating at Menominee Park lagoon (about 700 participants so far), a new sponsorship booklet and in-kind sponsor recognition, ongoing park tree pruning and buckthorn mowing in Zone 3, and posted seasonal job openings.
Parks staff provided a series of operational updates covering winter programs, sponsorship outreach, tree work and seasonal hiring.
Ice skating: Staff said the Menominee Park lagoon has been open for weekend public skating (Saturdays and Sundays, 12–4 p.m.) and reported roughly 7–9 open dates to date with about 700 participants total. Staff said they expect to remain open through February as conditions allow and that the Recreation Department has supported supervision and concessions.
Sponsorships and programming: Staff presented a new sponsorship and program guide — a digital “flip book” — that will be emailed to the chamber and other lists. The guide highlights monetary and in-kind sponsorship options for summer events, lists sponsorship benefits and includes a newspaper ad thanking in-kind sponsors. Staff said they had secured at least one large sponsor for summer programming and encouraged board members to share the guide.
Tree and invasive species work: Parks staff said they are in the middle of Zone 3 pruning (south of the river to about Ninth Avenue and toward Route 41), have completed mowing mature buckthorn in multiple parks to reduce seed sources and are following with lift-assisted pruning of taller trees. Staff said some street-side tree removals remain lower priority while weather permitted more off-road pruning this winter.
Seasonal hiring: Staff reminded the public that seasonal positions are posted on the City of Oshkosh website and encouraged community distribution of job postings for positions starting at age 14 and older.
Board members asked about a deteriorated road along the west side of the lagoon; staff said the road is scheduled for reconstruction in late fall after the season.
