Legion Street reconstruction to be bid in February; crosswalk moved to west side with RRFB

The Verona Common Council received an engineer's update on Feb. 10 saying the Legion Street reconstruction project will be bid in February and construction is expected to begin in June 2025.
Miss Fisher, presenting the engineer's report, described improvements at the intersections of West Verona Avenue, Legion Street, Rita Street and Westlawn Avenue. She said the proposal would remove the crosswalk on the east side of West Verona Avenue and add “a new crosswalk with a rapid rectangular flashing beacon along the west side of the intersection.”
The Mark Drive reconstruction project remains in design with construction planned later in the summer of 2025, Miss Fisher said. She also reported on two ongoing MMSD (MMSD) projects: Badger Mill Creek interceptor Phase 5 is complete; Phase 6 is permitted and expected to start in spring 2025. Pump Station 17 capacity improvements are also continuing.
Alder Helmke asked why the crosswalk was moved to the west side, noting previous feedback about high school students crossing on the east side. Miss Fisher said the crosswalk was realigned to be more perpendicular to West Verona Avenue and that the west location was selected after staff review; she offered to provide more information on the decision.
No formal council action was taken on the reconstruction at the Feb. 10 meeting; the engineer noted design completion and the upcoming bid schedule.
