Council approves Pacific Project Heroes ‘hometown hero’ banners on Third Avenue May–November

The Oakdale City Council on a 3-0 vote approved Pacific Project Heroes’ request to place military veteran and active-duty banners on Third Avenue from May through November.
JR McCarty of Pacific Project Heroes and staff briefed the council. Organizers asked to keep the existing hardware size to reduce damage from repeatedly moving brackets; they said the program will remain at no cost to the city. The group said banners typically include name, rank and years served; organizers also said they will seek to include more female service members this year.
Council members praised the program’s downtown presence and said it brought people to the area last year. Staff and organizers said 16 poles provide 32 banner locations and that applicants must have a local connection to Oakdale—current or former residents or a service member with a child from Oakdale—to qualify. Applications will be posted online and via social media; organizers said they will accept hard-copy applications if needed and can use non-military photos if families do not have service photos.
Mayor Pro Tem Smith, Council member Potassie and Mayor Barrios voted yes to approve the banners.
