Council donates surplus 2020 Ford Explorer police interceptor to Chowchilla Union High School public safety program

The Chowchilla City Council voted Jan. 14 to donate a surplus 2020 Ford Explorer police interceptor (unit 62) to the Chowchilla Union High School public safety elective program.
Lieutenant Denny and Chief (Plummer) explained the vehicle has about 55,000 miles but had previously been involved in a nonmajor accident; enterprise Fleet Services assessed a lower resale value because of that accident. Staff told the council the department is receiving replacement vehicles through its enterprise contract and that donating unit 62 will not leave the department short of patrol cars.
City staff described the school’s public safety program as a multi‑level career-technical-education (CTE) class that has expanded to three levels and may add a fourth level that would include patrol vehicle exercises; the vehicle will allow students to practice scenarios and scheduling independent of the department’s patrol fleet.
Councilmember questions chiefly focused on whether the donation would reduce department capacity and on vehicle valuation; staff said the department receives about two to three new vehicles per year under its replacement program and that unit 62 had not been used recently and would not create a shortfall.
The council approved the resolution by roll call vote (all councilmembers present voted yes).
