Council appoints Nate Brozovich to Planning Commission to fill unexpired term

The council interviewed three candidates earlier in the meeting: Charlie Schmidt (longtime Clayton resident and retired lieutenant colonel), Nate Brozovich (appearing by video, described his community and HOA experience and current public-sector work), and Natalie Archangel (registered nurse practitioner and Kaiser regional director). Each candidate answered a standard set of questions about qualifications, the role of planning commissioners, how they would handle conflicting viewpoints and the issues likely to appear before the commission in the next two years.
Brozovich told the council he had served as a homeowners association treasurer and on a private school board, and that his public-sector work put him in frequent contact with plan sponsors and municipal processes. "A planning commissioner balances growth and preservation, ensuring the development that aligns with the city's long-term vision and community needs," Brozovich said during his interview.
Council discussion emphasized several points raised by candidates: knowledge of the general plan and municipal code, the need to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, and listening to differing viewpoints while following legal and policy constraints. Mayor Troopiano said Brozovich "talked about economic growth and vitality" and that "I'm leaning more towards Nate Brozovich for this position." Several council members thanked all applicants for volunteering.
The appointment motion passed with the roll call recorded as Council Member Diaz: yes; Council Member Ania: yes; Council Member Tillman: aye; Vice Mayor Juan: aye; Mayor Troopiano: yes.
Next steps: Brozovich will take the Planning Commission seat at the next commission meeting. The appointment fills the term vacated when a commissioner was elected to the council; the term runs through June 30, 2026.
