First District Health Unit updates council on 2024 services and Ward County opioid task force plan

Holly Bruckis, executive director of the First District Health Unit, presented the unit’s 2024 service summary and described the newly finalized plan for the Ward County opioid task force, which includes City of Minot settlement funds allocated for local opioid response.
Bruckis reminded the council that North Dakota law contemplates public‑health coverage across the state and described the unit’s core functions — communicable disease control, chronic disease and injury prevention, environmental health, maternal and child health, and access to clinical care — across the seven counties First District serves. She provided the council with service‑summary numbers and offered to bring a fuller slide presentation back to council in June.
On the opioid task force, Bruckis said the final plan submitted to the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services includes community partners and will launch a medication‑assisted treatment (MAT) program in the Ward County jail. She said the program is newly kicked off in January and staff will follow up with partners and the council as implementation progresses.
Council members had no immediate questions; Bruckis invited members to request comparative 2023–2024 figures and said she would return to provide additional context in June.
