Leawood staff say Ironwoods Park bathhouse likely needs replacement; cost estimates to come

City parks staff told the Leawood governing body that the bathhouse at Ironwoods Park appears too damaged to repair and that staff will present replacement options and cost estimates to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the council.
The parks director, Chris Claxton (absent from the meeting), had her report presented by Stephanie Star. Star said staff has engaged a consulting firm to produce options and cost estimates and that reducing features such as showers could lower the replacement cost. Claxton had previously discussed the shower question with the advisory board and indicated options would be returned to the committee once cost estimates were available.
Councilmembers discussed the operational impacts. Councilmember Kane noted the cabins at Ironwoods would not be rented again this year because of the facility issues and staff said short-term accommodations such as porta-potties would be provided. The council accepted the staff report from the parks director by voice vote; the record shows unanimous approval by members present.
Staff said they will return with cost estimates and options for the bathhouse replacement and that the advisory board will review potential configurations and amenities before the council makes any contract or budget decisions.
