The Leawood Board of Zoning Appeals approved a fence-height exception on Jan. 22 to allow installation of a 6-foot wood privacy fence at 2900 West 90th Street.
The ruling came after a short staff report and remarks by applicants Tamara and Phil Vetch, who said they bought the property about two years ago and are replacing an existing deteriorated fence. "We wanna replace, the fence," Tamara Vetch told the board, saying the owners removed old panels that were in very poor condition and want to extend a six-foot fence along the property perimeter back from the street approximately 35–45 feet.
Board members asked whether the proposed fence would be on the street side; the applicant clarified the fence would be set back well behind the house. The staff report referenced an historic presence of fences on that lot: "There's been fences there since 1968," a staff member said during the presentation.
After questions, a board member moved to approve the case, a second was given, and the board approved the exception by voice vote. The applicants were told they will receive written notice of the decision.
The decision allows the Vetches to proceed with the planned wood privacy fence subject to any standard permitting requirements.
