The Manhattan City Commission approved on Jan. 14 the first reading of an ordinance to rezone 10 tracts west of downtown to the Downtown Commercial (CD) district by unanimous roll call.
Planning staff said the area includes parking and other parcels the Beyond Tomorrow plan envisions as an extension of downtown commercial form and that the rezoning would exclude nearby residential streets along Houston. Staff also confirmed typical places of assembly (such as churches) are permitted uses in the CD district and would not be impeded.
A motion to approve the first reading passed 5–0. The clerk recorded favorable roll‑call votes from Commissioner Mota, Commissioner Mitten, Mayor Susan Adamczak, Commissioner McCullough, and Commissioner Opelt.
Staff said they had excluded residential parcels along Houston from the CD designation and that the rezoning would support contiguous downtown design standards; public comment was invited and none was offered on the item at the hearing.
The ordinance passed first reading; subsequent readings and public notice are required for final adoption.
