Shawnee renews CityRide contract with ZTrip; council asks staff to pursue county coordination

The Shawnee City Council on Jan. 13 approved a one‑year renewal of the CityRide curb‑to‑curb microtransit contract with WHC KCT LLC doing business as ZTrip and directed staff to explore coordination with county microtransit services.
Colin Duffy, deputy city manager, said the CityRide program has operated for more than a decade and that the city maintains a business liaison for ZTrip to receive and forward resident complaints. Council members raised concerns about reliability after reports of missed pickups; Duffy said complaints are passed to the contractor’s liaison so they can address service issues.
Council members also discussed county plans for microtransit. Duffy said the county’s current service does not serve areas west of I‑435, leaving parts of Shawnee without county coverage. Council member Gillette asked that the topic be added to the council’s budget retreat to discuss whether the city should continue or alter its service as county coverage changes.
The council approved the renewal by voice vote. Staff indicated they plan a 2025 discussion about whether to coordinate services with the county if the county expands coverage.
