Lexington County Library accepts federal tuition‑reimbursement grants for two employees

The Lexington County Planning Committee voted on Jan. 14 to accept two federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) tuition‑reimbursement awards administered through the South Carolina State Library on behalf of county library employees.
Kelly Poole, Lexington County Library director, told the committee the federal grants do not require local matching funds and are administered through the state library; the county acts as the pass‑through recipient. The committee approved accepting $2,032 to reimburse Summer Smith’s tuition and $2,664 to reimburse Emily Pruitt’s tuition. Both motions passed on committee voice votes with no opposition recorded.
Poole said the grants reimburse employees for tuition already paid; the library applies on the employees’ behalf and forwards reimbursement to them. Committee members asked no follow‑up questions during the motions. Bill Jones, chairman of the library board, addressed the committee separately and outlined how the library board reviews space, staffing and hours when setting priorities; he urged the council to consider those needs as the county grows.
The committee approved both grant acceptances and adjourned the Planning Committee without additional directives to staff on the awards.
