Euclid Civil Service Commission approves fire promotions, removes candidates and certifies new police and fire entry lists

The Euclid Civil Service Commission on Jan. 7 approved promotions in the Euclid Fire Department, removed several candidates from the Euclid Police Department certified entry list and certified new entry-level lists for both the Police and Fire departments.

The commission approved a mayoral request to promote John Reedy to captain and to promote Joe Fredo Fado to lieutenant in the Euclid Fire Department, with both promotions effective Jan. 10, 2025, according to correspondence read into the record from Mayor Kristen Hazanregale.

The action matters because the promotions respond to retirements and change the departmental leadership roster; the commission also moved to update candidate lists that the departments use to fill entry-level positions.

During the meeting Commissioner Robinson read a letter from Mayor Kristen Hazanregale requesting the two promotions. The commission voted to approve both promotions; no individual roll-call vote counts or dissenting votes were recorded on the transcript.

The commission also removed one candidate, Lavelle Eagle (candidate number 17), from the Euclid Police Department certified entry list "for cause," as announced on the record. In addition, four candidates were removed for failure to respond to commission or department communications: Noah Santiago (No. 6), Unique Robinson (No. 24), Devin Howard (No. 25) and Justin Wirtz (No. 27). The Police Department presented a new certified entry list dated Jan. 7, 2025 (42 candidates on the list); the commission moved and approved certification of that list. The Fire Department presented an entry-level list produced from a regional test given Dec. 3; the commission moved and approved certification of the fire list effective Jan. 7, 2025 (the list included candidates 1–110 as presented).

Other routine business included approval of the minutes from the commission's Dec. 3, 2024 meeting and a brief correspondence item noting one job opening: a part-time substitute van driver for the Recreation Department's senior programs. The meeting adjourned at approximately 4:23 p.m.
