Franklin County employees raised $750 during the January dress‑down fundraiser to benefit She's Somebody's Daughter, a local nonprofit focused on human‑trafficking awareness and prevention, county staff said Feb. 5.
County staff member Carrie Kenny told commissioners 150 employees across 21 departments participated in the fundraiser. Kenny said the jail initiated contact with the nonprofit and that the organization will provide prevention seminars for county employees as the partnership develops. "This began in 2012, as an awareness initiative... their mission remains the same, which is raising awareness, providing prevention education," Kenny said.
Sue Sellers, assistant program director for She's Somebody's Daughter, described outreach work the group does in jails, shelters, motels and community events and invited people to contact the program if they suspect someone is exploited. "If you would think there's a possibility of one of your relatives or friends that could be caught up in some kind of exploitation or trafficking, give us a call," Sellers said.
Why it matters: Commissioners said the program's awareness and prevention work could help identify and assist people vulnerable to exploitation in a county that is still growing. No county funds were allocated during the meeting; the item was a report on employee fundraising and a developing partnership for training.
The board offered public thanks to employees and to program representatives; no formal action was taken.
