Elk County to host candidates’ night; replica Liberty Bell arrives for America250 project

Elk County elections staff told commissioners on Jan. 2 that the county will hold a candidates’ night to distribute petition forms and explain filing procedures for the upcoming municipal elections, and that a list of offices to appear on local ballots will be posted to the county website no later than Feb. 18.
Kimberly Fry, the county’s director of elections and voter registration, said candidates’ night will be held at 6 p.m. in the courthouse annex (the meeting announcement gave the evening as Feb. 6) and that it will cover the number of petition signatures required, filing fees, paperwork and filing deadlines to appear on the May ballot. Fry said the county expects multiple municipal offices to be open (she referenced roughly 78 positions in one exchange and later mentioned about 70 positions as the list was still being finalized) and encouraged residents interested in running for local office to attend and use county staff as a resource.
In other community announcements, county leaders said Elk County will participate in America250 PA activities marking the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026. The county will receive a 3-by-3-foot fiberglass replica of the Liberty Bell that staff plan to prime, then circulate among the county’s nine school buildings so students can help decorate it. The county expects to display the bell at libraries and senior centers after school visits and will document the project for publicity.
County staff asked local media to expect a press release when the bell arrives (staff said it is due to arrive the day after the meeting) and to coordinate coverage. The commissioners also announced county offices will be closed Jan. 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and made general remarks encouraging civic participation and voting.
