District fund balance rises after grant reimbursements; enrollment remains below projections

YELM, Wash. — Yelm Community Schools finance staff told the board on Jan. 23 that the district's fund balance rose after claiming reimbursement grants from September through December, but enrollment remains below the budget projection.
A district staff member responsible for financial reporting said, "you might notice that the fund balance did, go up rather than stay constant like it typically does, but I think I mentioned before that we claimed all of our grants from September through December, our reimbursement grants were claimed all of." The staff member did not provide a dollar amount for the change during the meeting; grant amounts were described as claimed and recorded in the board packet.
On enrollment, the staff member said the district was "in a better position now" but that it remained under projection: "40 47 students, under projection," the staff member reported. The board noted that each student represents approximately $10,000 in state funding and that the district would watch enrollment closely through June because fluctuations affect revenue.
Kurt, from the student learning department, was thanked for providing data that schools use to shape improvement plans. Board members approved the school improvement plans in the meeting and will review building-level presentations again in late August.
The board received the financial and enrollment updates as part of its regular packet; staff said specific grant and fund-balance figures are available in the board materials provided to trustees.
