District delays Southworth covered-play installation until after school; sprinkler-system repairs scheduled

YELM, Wash. — The Yelm Community Schools facilities team told the school board on Jan. 23 it has scheduled repairs to dry-system sprinklers at two campuses and will delay the installation of a covered play structure at Southworth until students are not on site.
A facilities staff member said the dry-system sprinkler compressor at LACNAS is failing and that contractors will replace the compressor the following day. The same staff member said the district has a separate dry-system repair scheduled at Ridgeline near a covered walkway beside the bus loop.
On the proposed covered play area at Southworth, the facilities staff member said, "for safety reasons we're going to push that until school is dismissed." The district said steel members are in production and will be ready once students are off-site.
Facilities staff said they recently met with elementary principals to collect building concerns to feed into capital planning and will meet with secondary principals in February. The district also plans building-condition assessments tied to the OSPI ICOS system in February and March.
Technology Director Joshua Maynard commented on interdepartmental coordination, saying he had noticed improved collaboration since a new staff member, Casey, joined operations: "how great the collaboration and communication has been," Maynard said. A board member noted smaller operational items such as a repaired clock that was working after batteries were changed.
Board members had no outstanding questions about the facilities items and approved the facilities report during the meeting.
