Calhoun County Schools honors students, alumni and staff, including national teaching award recipient

Calhoun County Schools used part of its regular meeting to recognize students, alumni and employees for achievements and service.
Melanie Brooks of the Calhoun County Career Academy recognized Weber High School students Kyla Ho Salin and Ariana Pani, second-year health science students who provided emergency care and kept a patient stable until emergency responders arrived. Brooks said their actions demonstrated the real-world value of CareerTech training.
Retired teacher Ruth Mitchell introduced alumna Kimberly Christian Johnson and recounted Johnson's awards and career. The speakers said Johnson was Alabama State Teacher of the Year in 2022, received a National Education Association Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence, and was among teachers invited to the White House and honored by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. Johnson spoke to the board and community about the importance of public education and credited her teachers and family for her development.
Gail Frye, Weaver Elementary principal, introduced Connor Reed, a physician who recently performed reconstructive surgery for a board member's husband; Frye and the board praised Reed's skill and compassion.
The board also recognized Lori Lloyd, an Emerge teacher at Howell House/Excel Academy Annex, who was named educator of the year by The Arc of Calhoun and Claiborne counties for work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Superintendent Willis and board members publicly thanked recipients and guests and noted the role of alumni and staff in the district's success.
