Council approves rezoning of 520 Walter Street to residential medium for two single-family homes

The Lufkin City Council approved on second reading an ordinance rezoning 520 Walter Street from residential large to residential medium to permit construction of two single-family site-built homes.

City staff member Kevin reported that Michael Parker submitted the request on behalf of Ronnie Frankens. Kevin said the property is Block 1, Lot 1 of the Walter Street subdivision, comprises about 2.96 acres and is currently undeveloped. He said surrounding uses include manufactured dwellings and a mix of residential large and small lots; nearby landmarks noted were Strangers Rest Cemetery, Iglesia De Cristo Church of Christ and Hackney Elementary School. The comprehensive plan designation was described as medium-density residential.

Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approval and staff recommended the council adopt the ordinance on second reading. No members of the public spoke during the hearing. A councilmember moved approval, a second was recorded and the council adopted the ordinance by voice vote; all members said “aye” and no opposition was recorded.

The rezoning changes the classification on a nearly 3-acre undeveloped parcel to residential medium to allow two single-family site-built residential homes; no additional conditions or effective date were recorded during the meeting.
