Wilmington New Hanover County Feb. 5, 2025 The New Hanover County Planning Board agreed to continue a text amendment, TA25-01, that would add RV storage and RV camping as permitted accessory uses at lodges, fraternal and social organizations. Planning staff asked for additional research and a continuance; the applicant's representative said they had no objection.
Staff told the board the request was applicant-led and aimed to permit lodges to host and store RVs on their property, a service the lodge said it has provided informally for several years. Staff noted the subject property was zoned R-15, which does not allow RV storage, and that RV camping is normally permitted only through a special-use permit. Staff requested time to research rules in other jurisdictions, the locations of lodges in New Hanover County and how the proposed amendment would fit into the Unified Development Ordinance. Staff said it expected to return with a draft amendment at the Planning Board's March 6, 2025 meeting.
Brian DeBose, who identified himself as the Moose Lodge's immediate past president and the North Carolina Charities chairperson, spoke at the hearing and told the board he had no objection to the requested continuance. The board voted to continue the item to the March meeting.
