Commissioners name acting overseer for building and vehicle maintenance as department head retires

Stevens described day‑to‑day responsibilities that must be covered — approving overtime, handling labor‑relations questions, ensuring payroll, processing purchase orders and maintaining project continuity — and asked the board to name a commissioner liaison to act as the appointing authority during the interim.
After discussion the board moved and seconded a motion to name Commissioner Malloy as interim building maintenance superintendent. The roll call vote recorded Malloy as abstaining; the other two commissioners voted yes, approving the designation.
Human resources said the interim assignment is intended to be short term and requested that the board clearly delineate the commissioner‑liaison role during the coverage period so HR and maintenance staff know where to direct decisions about labor, payroll and project approvals. Commissioners expressed appreciation for outgoing department head Bill Hart and emphasized the importance of continuity in building and vehicle maintenance operations during the leadership gap.
