Residents urge Tempe Council to block rezoning of Shalimar Golf Course

Several Tempe residents urged the Tempe City Council on Feb. 6, 2025, to oppose rezoning the Shalimar Golf Course to allow high-density housing, saying the course is a community green space and wildlife habitat that should be preserved.
The call to oppose rezoning came during the public-comment period. Judy Suter, who said she lives in the Shalimar neighborhood, told the council she and her neighbors “oppose the rezoning of the Shalimar Golf Course to allow high density housing to replace the beautiful community green space.” She described the course as “a hub for community events” and said the course holds longstanding memories for longtime residents.
Former educator Steven Bersai also urged the council to preserve green spaces, saying Tempe’s parks “are places to play” and that earlier civic decisions to keep parks intact were wise. “We should keep the places as green as we can,” Bersai said.
Resident Michael Doyle, who said he lives on the golf course, described wildlife he’s observed on the property and said the course is “a magical place” for families and children learning to golf. “I really love Shalimar,” he said, and asked council members to vote against rezoning.
Speakers acknowledged that the property owner has the right to sell the land, but said rezoning would change how the land can be used. No council vote or formal action on rezoning occurred during this meeting.
The council did not take action on a Shalimar rezoning at the Feb. 6 meeting. If and when a rezoning or zoning-map amendment is formally scheduled, it would appear as a noticed public-hearing item on a future agenda.
