Southwood Glen teachers show district board how new Savvas literacy lessons look in third grade

Why it matters: District staff said the Savvas curriculum and instruction aligned to the science of reading are intended to lift universal (tier 1) instruction and increase student growth. Presenters cited targets to move students toward the 60th percentile and to close achievement gaps for students performing below the 20th percentile.
Curriculum details: Presenters described a five-lesson weekly pattern: a weekly launch that builds background knowledge and introduces a weekly question, a first read to gain main ideas, two close-read lessons to analyze text structure and character or main ideas, and a final lesson that synthesizes learning and produces a text-based product. Repeated readings are used across lessons to deepen comprehension.
Classroom example: During the demonstration the students worked on cause-and-effect details and summarizing skills from the biography text used that week. Teachers said the repeated-reading routine supports students’ ability to highlight key details, create summaries and build text-evidence habits that transfer to independent reading.
Implementation and training: The presenter team said Southwood Glen piloted the curriculum last year and participated in professional development, including LETRS training, to align instruction with the science of reading.
Ending: District staff and the Southwood Glen team encouraged family engagement nights and said parents are invited to learn how to support classroom learning at home; a K–8 Savvas family night was announced as an upcoming district event.
