Tyler ISD showcases semester of student visual and performing arts activity

Tyler ISD officials told the Board of Trustees at a workshop that students across the district participated in a wide range of visual and performing arts activities this semester, from elementary music partnerships to high school All-State recognitions.
The update summarized why the arts matter for the district: students performed at campus concerts and community events, submitted artwork to state and regional exhibitions, and took part in adjudicated ensembles and competitions. The presentation highlighted partnerships — including a long-running Carnegie Hall Link Up program with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra that allowed every fourth- and fifth-grade student districtwide to perform alongside the orchestra.
At the middle-school level, every campus with theater mounted a production; Hubbard’s new cafetorium was singled out as an asset. Bands supported Friday-night football programs and more than 70 middle-school band, choir and orchestra students earned seats in all-region ensembles. Two middle-school art students had work selected for display at the Bullock Texas State History Museum this March and may be considered for the Governor’s Gallery.
High-school students advanced in statewide competitions: the district earned a sixth consecutive District of Distinction Award from the Texas Art Educators Association; Legacy band advanced to the UIL area marching contest; more than 60 high-school musicians earned region ensemble chairs and 25 advanced to the final round of All-State auditions; choir student Vera Banta earned a chair in the All-State Mixed Choir; and orchestra and solo/ensemble entries advanced toward state contests.
Board members praised campus principals and staff for vetting production materials and for supporting students. Trustee comments asked staff to continue reviewing selected material for alignment with community standards and recognized principals who monitor programming.
District staff noted upcoming events including district one-act play contests, UIL solo and ensemble contests and Arts Fest in April.
