Washoe County commissioners, the Truckee Meadows Fire District board and the cities of Reno and Sparks on Thursday directed managers and fire chiefs to gather information on options for enhanced regional fire service, including steps that would allow the closest available units to respond across jurisdictional lines.
The request followed presentations from regional fire chiefs and Washoe County Emergency Management staff on preparedness, communication tools and recent response results, and passed unanimously as the boards voted to ask staff to return with needs, cost estimates and recommended next steps.
Why it matters: Officials said faster, simpler cross-jurisdiction response and a single or shared computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system could reduce response times, improve wildfire and medical outcomes, and cut duplication of effort and cost over time. Several speakers said the region’s existing patchwork of systems and boundaries causes delays and information loss when calls cross agency lines.
