Board discusses expanding student voice; members weigh role of student representative

Board members discussed Feb. 6 whether and how to expand student voice on the Gadsden ISD board after trustee Arlene (Murillo) presented materials about national student-board organizations and models used by other districts.
Murillo described examples in which student board members receive training, serve on executive student councils and sometimes receive modest stipends or scholarships; models vary widely nationwide, and some districts allow student members limited voting rights except on hiring, firing or personnel matters. She emphasized students' desire for substantive roles rather than ceremonial appearances and noted student research finding a sharp drop in school engagement between elementary and high school grades.
Board members generally supported exploring options but urged a cautious, incremental approach. Superintendent Dempsey recommended patience and suggested a multi-year term could allow board members and staff to evaluate student representatives' participation. Board member Morales recommended starting simply by nominating or electing a student from existing student leadership (for one semester or one year) as a nonvoting representative, then evolving the program.
No formal vote was taken. The board asked staff to return with implementation options and timelines if trustees want to pilot a student representative program.
