Board moves toward student-elected ex-officio representative; details and mentorship to be defined

Board members discussed implementing a student ex-officio (nonvoting) representative to the board as required by recent state regulation.
The board reviewed three options presented by staff: 1) appointment by the superintendent or principal; 2) election by the student body; or 3) appointment by a board vote following interviews. Several members expressed a preference for a student-body election and for selecting more than one student to ensure continuity and succession.
Staff said the regulation requires the board to adopt a process but allows local flexibility in selection. Trustees asked that the district prepare a written description of the role, expectations and benefits (for example, community-service credit or volunteer hours) and recommended assigning a board mentor to each student representative. The board agreed to develop the document and to aim to run the selection/election this spring so representatives can begin in the fall; appointments will be renewed annually and are open to reappointment.
Staff will present a draft selection process and role description for the board to approve at an upcoming meeting.
