Commissioners question Human Services Advisory Board appointment process; liaison reshuffle to be revisited

The Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners discussed appointments to the Human Services Advisory Board and commissioner liaison assignments at the Feb. 3, 2025 work session.

A commissioner said staff pulled an appointment from consent because they discovered 21 applications on file and wanted additional information, including the dates of the applications. The commissioner said, “We pulled off consent, so I can vote against it. But I'm just curious how that that happened,” and asked for more details and time to review the applicant pool. County staff responded that the Department of Social Services Board had voted unanimously to recommend the candidate to the commissioners and that staff would provide additional application-date details and follow up at the board's meeting in two weeks.

On liaison roles, Commissioner Wortman said he had been removed from a visitors bureau liaison position during a recent reshuffle and asked to be considered for a seat that another commissioner vacated. County staff said some seats are term appointments and that removing a prior appointee may be required to fill the seat; staff indicated they would compile a list of boards and committees and return with more detail at the regular meeting on Feb. 18.
