Superintendent Julie Nielsen presented a set of policy items for first reading related to students and staff. The package included student-discipline policy 506, bullying-prohibition policy 514, harassment and violence (student policy 413 and staff policy 525.1), mandated reporting policies 414 and 415, the family-and-medical-leave policy and several others.
Nielsen said most policies showed no substantive edits but that policy 514 (bullying prohibition) contained a requested change to a cross-reference: the board’s policy office confirmed the notice language should reference article/section 2(e) (the definition of malicious and sadistic conduct) rather than 2(d) (an investigation-timeframe paragraph). Board members and policy staff discussed why the district maintains separate harassment policies for students and staff (the staff policy refers to protected classes under the Minnesota Human Rights Act while the student policy is situated in the student-rights section). Nielsen said the policy committee had completed its review and that corrected wording would be brought back for second reading and formal adoption at a future meeting.
