Board members and district attorneys discussed and revised a draft job description for the district’s chief school financial officer during a special session on Feb. 6, and the board approved the updated posting language and an expedited timetable to recruit a replacement for the outgoing CSFO.
What the board changed and requested The attorneys from Boardman & Carr presented a draft CSFO posting and recommended language. Board members requested several edits that were incorporated during the meeting: an MBA or graduate degree and a CPA credential should be listed as preferred qualifications rather than required; certification (AASBO/CSFO equivalent) and continuing education were affirmed as desirable; the candidate must be bondable; and three or more years of supervisory experience in an educational accounting setting was recommended as preferred.
Application handling and timeline The board approved an expedited posting: staff and the law firm will post the opening to professional channels immediately and accept applications through the end of the month, with the aim of narrowing candidates and beginning interviews in early March. The law firm will accept applications and perform initial vetting. At the board’s request, initial applicant packets will be redacted to remove names and identifying information for the first screening round; the board will be given a redacted pool, and names will be revealed for finalists. Board members discussed aiming for an April 1 start date for the new hire but agreed the exact schedule depends on applicant response and contract negotiations.
Why this matters Board members noted the district’s current CSFO will depart June 1; the role carries fiduciary responsibilities and is hired by board appointment, in consultation with the superintendent, under state statute language noted in the presentation. Members emphasized the need to move quickly because multiple CSFO vacancies exist statewide.
Speakers and roles - Attorney from Boardman & Carr (presenter of draft job description) - Julius (attorney/consultant assisting with process) - Superintendent (presenting timeline and coordination) - Board members who spoke on qualifications and timeline: Mr. Kubik, Mr. Byrd, Mr. Jones, Mr. Best (board member names used in transcript)
Next steps The board voted to approve the revised job description and asked staff and the law firm to post the vacancy immediately to state and national education job lists, AASBO, AASB and general job platforms to widen the pool. The law firm will redact names for the first round, vet candidates and return a short list for board consideration.
