Board welcomes two locally raised fire inspectors; fire prevention complaints and training highlighted

The Carpinteria Summerland Fire Protection District introduced two new fire inspectors and received updates on fire-prevention complaints and training.
Fire management formally introduced Fire Inspector Van Joy and Fire Inspector Megan Garcia. Staff said Van Joy began with the district in November, was raised in Carpinteria, attended local schools and Cuesta College and earned a bachelor's degree from Cal State Channel Islands; he lives in Ojai with his wife and two sons. Staff said Garcia began Jan. 6, was born and raised in Carpinteria, graduated from Carpinteria High School and earned a fire-science certificate from Santa Barbara and Oxnard city colleges; staff noted she previously worked in logistics and fire prevention for five years with Santa Barbara County Fire and lives in Carpinteria.
Fire Marshal Mike reported five fire-prevention complaints during the month with one resolved and said many complaints concern brush clearance. The marshal noted that enforceable brush-clearance enforcement begins June 1, so some complaints are being logged for follow-up closer to the compliance window.
Board members praised the district's investment in live-fire structural training to maintain skills for low-frequency, high-risk incidents. Directors also thanked staff for participating in community meetings in Summerland and elsewhere.
The board announced plans for a closed session at the March meeting to discuss leadership needs and to receive a joint-station committee report on Summerland station efforts.
