Shelby County officials report public-safety training, equipment deliveries and rollout of TextMyGov alert system

Sheriff's office, rescue volunteers and county staff delivered a series of routine public-safety updates at the Shelby County meeting, reporting progress on vehicle outfitting, training and equipment purchases funded in part through ARPA dollars and a near-term rollout of a county alert system.
The sheriff said contract negotiations are nearing completion and described work to outfit a new vehicle, including reusing equipment stripped from older cars. "We've been busy, continue doing our regular stuff, plus contract negotiations," the sheriff said.
Rescue volunteers reported they have handled three calls so far this year and recorded 59 calls last year; the rescue organization has 15 members. They run monthly meetings on the second Wednesday and trainings on the fourth Wednesday. Rescue has used ARPA funds to buy new equipment, has received an ETV and a grain-bin stabilization rescue tube, and is awaiting helmet deliveries later this month. "We're in 3 calls this year already... We have 15 members," the rescue representative said.
The dive team reported January first-aid and CPR training, upcoming scuba-cylinder training for this Saturday, and that new dive computers have arrived and will be put into service. Work on a trailer and truck accessories also is pending when the new pickup is delivered.
County staff member Scott briefed the board on the county's TextMyGov notification system, which has been active for about three weeks. Scott said department heads are using the system and that unlimited training is available. He said the final step to enable FEMA-style emergency alerts is his FEMA certification; once completed, the county can send area-based emergency alerts. "The TextMyGov system has been up and running for about 3 weeks now," Scott said. He advised residents can subscribe by texting Shelby County to 91896; the county has a subscription widget on its website.
County officials reminded departments to share vehicle identification numbers and equipment listings with the court clerk for insurance purposes, particularly for large items such as UTVs.
