The South Russell Village Planning Commission on Oct. 12 approved a request to rebrand the convenience restaurant at 540 East Washington Street as Tavern 6.
The application, filed by Jim Tabathek of 540 Property Group LLC, asked the commission to permit the name and brand change for the existing restaurant at the address. Tabathek told the commission he planned an interior refresh, new television screens and to retain many current employees while adjusting operating hours.
Tabathek said, “we wanna rebrand the, the business, so more pressure concept,” and described revised hours including midweek closing and later weekend hours. He also told commissioners the existing bar and patio would remain and the project would not change the building footprint.
Commissioners asked about signage and fire inspections. Tabathek said the new sign would be “same size” as the current backlit Panini sign and that the business would arrange required inspections before opening. He asked whether a temporary cover or sleeve on the existing sign would be allowed if the new sign was not ready by the 18th; commissioners indicated that sign placement and final appearance were within the scope of the upcoming architectural review.
A small number of neighbors spoke during the public hearing, noting parking and patio visibility; Tabathek said he believed the site offered more parking than many nearby restaurants and planned outdoor seating in the front and refreshed patio furniture.
Motion to approve the rebranding carried unanimously. Commissioners voting in favor as recorded at the hearing were Ruth (last name not specified), Lisa (last name not specified), Mark Porter, Greg (last name not specified) and Phyllis Moreno. The commission noted that the sign would go through architectural review and the sign itself would not need to return to the commission for approval.
The applicant was advised to complete required building and fire inspections before reopening under the new brand. The commission moved to the regular meeting following the public hearing.
