District staff presented a proposal for naming district facilities tied to current modernization projects and recommended forming citizen advisory committees for site-level naming decisions.
Daniel (Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Leadership, School Support and Safety) told the board the district has a board policy guiding facility naming and suggested the board appoint citizen advisory committees to review name suggestions. He noted that the policy references the board s having authority to name district facilities and that community participation is encouraged: "board policy 7 3 1 0 8," he said, and later added that "the board does, in fact, see have the right name on district facility" (as read at the meeting).
Daniel proposed a timeline tied to ongoing construction and modernization: committee appointments and outreach in the spring, public hearings in April–May, and possible action following the public hearing. He stressed that site-level elements (for example, a soccer field) could have separate naming processes from a campus-level name and that the district would aim to publicize any change to reduce confusion for alumni and families.
Board members discussed committee composition and outreach approaches. One trustee suggested a five- to seven-member committee with representation from the teacher union, classified union, an administrator, parents, community members and a board member. Board members emphasized outreach and suggested including students for middle-school naming discussions.
Staff said they would return with a draft committee composition and timeline. The presentation also referenced the state-required school identification (CDS) code remaining the same if a campus name changed, and staff said they would research rollout steps to preserve transcripts and alumni records.
No action was taken; the board directed staff to draft committee recommendations and an outreach plan for a future meeting.
