The Whitestown Fire Board discussed a proposed salary-ordinance amendment the chief plans to present to the Town Council to allow a temporary, fourth Division Chief position to facilitate a handover between the outgoing fire marshal and the incoming Division Chief of Fire Prevention.
Under the current adopted salary ordinance the department's Division Chief positions are budgeted as three personnel. The chief said he intends to hire the incoming fire marshal three weeks early โ from Feb. 18 to March 7 โ so there would be four Division Chiefs on the payroll during that handover period. The chief stated the request is for transparency before presenting it to council and said he would not hire an additional permanent chief without council approval.
Board members asked whether the temporary fourth position would automatically be removed later; the chief said that authority lies with the council and that any permanent staffing change would require council action. No formal board motion or vote was taken; the chief said he will take the ordinance amendment request to council next week and the board will be updated depending on council's action.
