The Whitestown Fire Department's chief told the Fire Board he has selected Tony Smith as the new Division Chief of Fire Prevention to replace the retiring chief Milstead, with an anticipated start date of Feb. 18, 2025, pending completion of onboarding steps.
The chief said Smith retired previously as operations chief of Brownsburg and currently serves as a deputy fire marshal for the Town of Avon; the department expects him to transfer to Whitestown mid-February if all goes well. The chief said the department completed fire marshal interviews and selected Smith.
The chief also reported personnel and training updates: all new hires completed the pre-employment requirements and will begin academy training the week of Feb. 10, with new-hire orientation scheduled for Feb. 7. The department recorded 1,200 hours of fire training in January, including an SCBA confidence course in an acquired structure, and 1,200 total hours were cited for the month. EMS training totaled 363 hours in January, with 84 patient contacts, 80 transports, 757 transport miles and $108,506 in billed services year to date. EMS billing for January was $40,579.88. The chief noted the department continues to conduct inspections, plan reviews and alarm/sprinkler tests despite personnel transitions.
No formal board action was recorded on the hiring announcement; the chief presented the selection and timeline as information for the board's awareness.
