The Whitestown Fire Board gave a favorable recommendation to the Town Council to approve a purchase of personal protective equipment (turnout gear) under a special-purchase justification, with a not-to-exceed amount of $85,000.
The chief told the board the MES quote for turnout gear totaled $75,716 using the state of Indiana bid pricing; the chief said the list price the department had received was $174,673, representing substantial savings by using the state bid. Board members noted the savings could be roughly $99,000 based on the comparisons presented. Legal reviewed the procurement documents and the chief said the purchase would cover gear for seven new hires and a five-year rotation program for existing personnel.
The motion before the board was to give a favorable recommendation to council to approve the purchase not to exceed $85,000. The motion passed by recorded voice vote of five in favor, none opposed. Board members emphasized the time sensitivity for pricing and the need to equip new personnel before academy start dates.
The board's recommendation will be forwarded to the town council for final contract approval and appropriation.
