Sustainability committee asks council to consider joining Wisconsin Local Government Climate Coalition

The Monona sustainability committee asked the council on Feb. 3 to consider a resolution to join the Wisconsin Local Government Climate Coalition (WLGCC).
Assistant planner and sustainability staffer Thor told council WLGCC is a collaboration of local governments that shares tools and best practices for decarbonization and resilience. The coalition focuses on decarbonizing buildings and transportation, greening the grid, people-centered land use, and nature-based resilience strategies.
Thor said there are currently 23 member local governments, including nearby communities such as McFarland, Madison, Middleton and Sun Prairie. WLGCC recently secured a grant through ICLEI to develop a greenhouse-gas inventory tool for local governments; membership would give Monona access to that tool and allow the city to perform a community GHG inventory.
Thor told council there are no fees to join and the expected staff commitment is relatively low: monthly 60-minute update meetings and optional bimonthly work groups for specific priorities. The committee has identified a recommended staff liaison (assistant planner) in the draft resolution; councils in other communities often name a mayor, alderperson or sustainability coordinator as liaison.
The resolution was presented for first reading and is scheduled to return for formal consideration on Feb. 17.
