SkillsUSA student officers and instructor brief TEA on student experiences and outcomes

Representatives of SkillsUSA’s Kansas postsecondary team and their Fort Hays Tech Northwest instructor spoke to the Kansas Postsecondary Technical Education Authority on Jan. 30 to describe student experiences at state and national competitions and leadership events.
Becky (SkillsUSA coordinator) introduced the student officers, and several students described personal and program outcomes. Omar Lopez, SkillsUSA Kansas postsecondary president and a second‑year app‑development student, recounted competing at state and attending nationals and a Washington, D.C., visit. Vice President of Finance Jan Blair Lugin described placing third nationally in web design and said SkillsUSA helped him secure scholarships and sharpen his resume. Other officers — Heather Johnson (vice president of governance), Selena Valdez Dominguez (vice president of program), Nicole Medina (vice president of membership) and Isaac Bisaso (vice president of partnership) — described leadership development, networking, and career preparation they attributed to SkillsUSA participation.
Instructor Jeremy Skirtland told the Authority that SkillsUSA builds leadership and networking opportunities that help students succeed in technical fields and in public speaking. Multiple students said SkillsUSA experiences built confidence, helped with scholarship applications, and expanded professional networks.
Ending: Board members applauded the students and thanked SkillsUSA and Fort Hays Tech Northwest staff for the partnership; the Authority welcomed student participation at future meetings and legislative engagement during CTE Month.
