KDADS partners outline statewide person-centered engagement events, Charting the LifeCourse trainings

Shelly, a UMKC/Nexus presenter, said the project will focus on integrating person‑centered practices across systems and emphasized that “you can't train yourself into a person centered system.”
The presentation laid out three overlapping work streams — engagement, systems change recommendations and training — with engagement described as the primary work stream. Amanda, a UMKC/Nexus engagement lead, said the team will visit each of seven regions in Kansas and hold one‑day, in‑person events (example schedules offered: 9 a.m.–2 p.m. or 10 a.m.–3 p.m.) beginning in February with sessions through spring and makeup dates for weather delays.
The presenters said the regional events are intended to convene people who use long‑term supports and services, family caregivers, self‑advocacy groups, providers, managed care organizations and state staff to share local visions of person‑centered services. Hosts would receive planning support from the Nexus team, and the project will cover lunch, meeting room expenses and travel stipends for end users and family or self‑advocates where needed.
Amanda outlined the host role: a virtual planning meeting is scheduled for February 3 for organizations that want to serve as regional host sites and the Nexus team will help with facilitation and outreach. She said a hosting survey/form will be posted and links were shared in the meeting chat.
Presenters also promoted the Charting the LifeCourse showcase in Kansas City (April 29–May 1) and said a new one‑day fundamentals training — described as a person‑centered, Charting the LifeCourse fundamentals course — will be offered for the first time at that event and later online. The team also noted ongoing virtual series, an ambassador track and digital badges for those who want additional facilitator training.
KDADS staff reiterated that meeting materials and registration links will be distributed via KDADS web pages and the program listserv.
The presenters invited attendees to raise questions in chat or on future calls; the next stakeholder call was scheduled for March 17.
