Glynn County reports vape-detector rollout in high schools and career academy; detections and restroom 'aggression' alerts declined

Glynn County Schools briefed the board Feb. 6 on the districtwide installation of ceiling-mounted vape detectors at several secondary schools and at the career-and-technical site.

Miss Senitra Haywood said the district began installing detectors in October 2024 at Brunswick High School, Glenn Academy and expanded to the Golden House College and Career Academy in December. Haywood said the devices detect vaping (nicotine and THC), monitor air quality and decibel levels in restroom areas, and also generate tamper alerts. Alerts are delivered to administrators via a phone app and by email.

Haywood told the board the district established baseline readings after installation and that reported detections and the device category labeled "aggression" (decibel alerts) dropped by almost half after monitoring and response. She said the system's counting method can produce multiple alerts from one person if they activate a detector repeatedly; Haywood cited a total deployment of about 137 devices districtwide.

Board members asked how the district follows up on detections. Haywood said detections spiked initially at installation but have since declined as students became aware of the detectors and as administrators followed up. Members also asked about how devices are used during and after school hours, at rentals and events; staff said towers can be muted for off-hours notifications and retained monitoring may continue for events and rentals.
