The Michigan House of Representatives adopted House Resolution 18 on Tuesday recognizing February 2025 as American Heart Month and Feb. 5, 2025, as National Wear Red Day in the state.
Representative Rogers, the resolution sponsor, told the chamber the measure was personal and urged colleagues to "know your numbers" — total cholesterol, HDL, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index — and to seek emergency care when needed. "Be vigilant about each other, colleagues, as well as our staff and visitors. If you see someone struggling, call professionals and dial 911," Rogers said.
The measure was read by the clerk and taken up after Majority Floor Leader Pastumas moved that the House proceed to the order of motions and resolutions. The Speaker called for the question; members voted by voice and the Speaker announced the resolution adopted. Representative Rogers also asked that the cosponsorship portal for the resolution be opened.
The resolution is ceremonial and directs observance of an awareness month and a single awareness day; it does not appropriate funds or change law. Rogers highlighted that "for more than a decade, heart disease has been the leading cause of death in Michigan," and emphasized racial and gender disparities in outcomes for women, particularly Black and Hispanic women. Those remarks appeared during the sponsor's statement and were not followed by formal amendment or additional debate.
The House adjourned until Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025, at 12:00 p.m.
