Summary
The board approved a package of consolidated action items, with two policy items (EBC and EBCA) held for edits; the motion passed unanimously and staff will review suggested language changes.
The Corvallis School District 509J Board of Education approved consolidated action items with two exceptions after brief discussion and requests for minor edits.
Board member Shauna moved to adopt the consolidated action items as submitted “with the exceptions of EBC and EBCA.” Therese seconded the motion. The roll call recorded aye votes from Sammy, Judah, Bernie, Chris, Shauna, Therese and the chair; the motion passed.
Board members had asked staff to pull several policies for closer review. Sammy requested that language in the draft emergency policy EBC be expanded to include additional all‑hazard steps drawn from FEMA guidance (for example: hazard assessment and control, risk identification, containment and mitigation steps, and transportation contingency planning). Sammy also asked that EBCA’s requirement to provide “an explanation of how the situation was resolved” within 24 hours be clarified to allow for either a statement that the situation “was resolved” or that it “is being resolved” when appropriate.
Staff confirmed the changes requested will be reviewed and that the board will see revised language on the pulled policies on a future agenda. The board also heard that multiple student‑health and safety policies in the consolidated packet had been updated to reflect current OAR requirements and local nurse input; Melissa, district staff member and policy lead, said nurses had customized portions of the student health services policy to clarify assessment processes and licensing expectations.
Board members thanked staff for the work to align policies with state requirements and for adding language that the district’s nurses recommended. The board moved the remaining consolidated items forward and scheduled additional review for the pulled policies.
