Senate adopts resolutions honoring UAW White Shirt Day, school counselors and updates rules

The Michigan Senate adopted three resolutions on Feb. 11, 2025: Senate Resolution 7 recognizing Feb. 11, 2025, as United Auto Workers White Shirt Day; Senate Resolution 8 declaring February 2025 as School Counseling Week; and Senate Resolution 9, which amends the Senate’s standing rules.

Senate Resolution 7 was offered by Senator Cherry and advanced by unanimous voice vote. In remarks printed for the journal, Senator Cherry said the resolution commemorates the Flint sit‑down strike and its effect on labor rights. "Today, we remember and honor those trailblazers whose heroic actions paved this pathway for progress in Michigan," Cherry said.

Senate Resolution 8 was offered by Senator Pol Hanke and adopted by voice vote. Hanke highlighted the role of school counselors and cited a student‑to‑counselor ratio he described as "598 to 1," noting it exceeded the recommended ratio of 250 to 1 and saying the resolution aims to raise awareness and support for counselors.

Senate Resolution 9, offered by Senator Brink, was also adopted without amendment after the rules were suspended for immediate consideration.

All three measures were advanced by the chamber without recorded roll‑call tallies; the clerk announced adoption after the traditional voice‑vote formula of "All those in favor will say aye." The resolutions will be printed in the Senate journal as requested by their sponsors.
